I know its been a long time since I posted but I'll get into that in my 2018 wrap post. For now here is Part I of II about some podcasts that I've been listening to,
Audio Dramas
These podcasts will have you on a wild ride that you can’t seem to shake yourself from! During and after listening to them it can be hard to differentiate what is real and what isn’t – you might want to make yourself a totem (Inception reference).
Blackwood (2018)
This podcast follows three teenagers uncovering a conspiracy in their small town, and the omnipresent threat presented by people in power. The three teenagers and listeners quickly realize that the monsters we think hide in the shadows are a lot scarier than we could have ever imagined.
Tanis (2015)
"compelling and wildly addictive" - The Guardian
Tanis bi-weekly science-fiction podcast that explores the of the nature of truth, conspiracy, and information. I started it last week and it’s all I can think about. Be careful because it draws you in without you realizing that there is something to be drawn into.
The Last Movie (2018)
This podcast is a spin-off from Tanis, but stands completely alone. With the same host and supporting character you are once again drawn into something so bizarre and otherworldly that you cannot help but binge it as quickly as possible. Here Nic and MK explore the possible existence of "The Last Movie," an infamous underground feature film, reputed to drive you insane. The stories that surround it are full of bloodshed and controversy.
The Leap Year Society (2018)
This podcast works to uncover the truth behind an age-old, secretive group known only as the Leap Year Society, whose mysterious recruitment program is linked to research that borders on the paranormal.
True crime is not for everyone. A lot of what is talked about here is hard to listen to at times and if you listen to too much of it in one go you might not be able to sleep at night. Exercise self-care when listening to some of these.
Canadian True Crime
Missing & Murdered (2016)
Now with two seasons this podcast looks at cases of Indigenous women who are missing and/or murdered and the cases that surround their lives as well as what this phenomenon in Canada means for everyone.
Someone Knows Something (2016)
Every season follows a different cold case and the host, David Ridgen (Canadian award-winning filmmaker and writer) does a very good, in-depth job of exploring every case and every angle. His work has led to cases being solved and his work on this podcast will draw you in very quickly. This podcast is now on its 5th season and 4/5 seasons have been focused on Canadian cold cases.
Thunder Bay (2018)
A new podcast that is getting a lot of attention and traction in the media these days because of its content. The highest homicide and hate crime rates in the country. A mayor charged with extortion. A police chief who faced trial for obstruction of justice. Nine tragic deaths of Indigenous high schoolers.
A town in Ontario has a history of murder that is as cold blooded as it gets. The people in Thunder Bay call it a game in which they push young drunk Indigenous kids into the river, but really – my friend said it best – it’s just cold-blooded murder.
The host, Ryan McMahon is Anishinaabe and has very publicly said that the Thunder Bay police have “stopped seeing Indigenous people as humans,” and this has got to come to an end.
I find myself asking every episode how this is real life, we live in 2018. Everyone should listen to this podcast and join forces as allies with the Indigenous people of Canada.
American True Crime
Mile Marker 181 (2018)
A recent find by me and I would highly recommend it to everyone who loves true crime and those who think that justice always prevails. The first season is not done yet but you will find yourself anxiously waiting for new episodes. The show is hosted and produced by Emily Nestor and follows the “unsolved” murder of Jaleayah Davis.
Generation Why (2012)
The two hosts, Aaron and Justin, discuss theories and their opinions on unsolved murders, controversies, mysteries, conspiracies, and true crime. This podcast started in 2012 and unfortunately the oldest episode you on get on Apple podcasts is 88 but each episodes stands alone and you can pick and choose the evets you want to listen to, for example Lizzie Borden, The Dyatlov Pass incident, or an episode on the Menendez brothers (the best I’ve heard yet by the way – their Steven Avery episode is also very well done if you are interested in that case).
The Trail Went Cold (216)
Every podcast focuses on a missing persons case that has gone cold and lays out all the facts and reviews theories as to what could have happened and where the person could be. The host Robin Warder also has a very calming voice (for me) so that helps when listening to some of the content he presents. Also a lot of the cases covered are American but Robin does venture outside the United States for some of his episodes!
UK True Crime
They Walk Among Us (2016)
This podcast focuses on UK true crime – cases I had never heard of before but am so intrigued by. As you can tell I love true crime and everything related to it so finding new cases that I have never heard of before or come across in my reading is very exciting to me.
